A Comfortable Workspace

A Comfortable Workspace

One of the reasons you freelance is because the office can be a drab, uncomfortable place that isn’t conducive to inspiration or creativity when working. So don’t make the same mistakes at home when setting up your personal workspace! Think comfort! Think warmth! But also, you know, think productivity. Your home office should be the right balance of creative coziness and constructive functionality to get projects done in style. A few key determinations when filling your workspace needs can be all the difference. Let’s take a look.

The Right Space – Working from home means you live at the office, so make sure you choose the perfect spot. Will it be the spare bedroom? In the basement? That formal room with the fancy furniture you never use? Will a room with a window be a source of inspiration, or distraction? Whatever space you decide on, make sure it’s not too hot, cold, noisy, quiet, smelly, small, or otherwise overly-distracting. Check for things like outlets and storage space, you’ll need plenty of both. And it should be a separate space, dedicated to your work. Don’t just pile things onto the kitchen table every day when it’s time to work on projects. This is going to be the place where you earn your living. Prioritize it.

Don’t Skimp On Comfort - Speaking of prioritizing, make sure your office is a pleasing place to spend time. Chances are you’ll be sitting at a desk for long periods of time, so do better than a folding chair. Splurge on a seat that’s ergonomically correct and posture-producing! Your back will thank you for it. Or for those who prefer not to sit all day, try a stand up desk. Comfort should include proper lighting (not too harsh, not too soft), maybe a warm lamp is what your space needs. Just because it’s an office doesn’t mean it has to feel like one. Sure it needs to be task-oriented, but it needs to be personal as well. Which means…

Let It Inspire! – Your workspace is YOURS! Load up the walls with inspiration. Get creative juices flowing with colors that pop and sparkle the soul. Maybe a couple of plants will help in relieving the stress of the day, while a few fun pictures can inspire imagination for design projects to be completed. Your office can be tailored to suit your motivation and productivity at home, so periodic makeovers are encouraged. Remember – it’s your workspace. Make it a comfortable one!
